제주 고산리 유적은 우리나라에서 가장 이른 시기의 신석기시대 유적으로 알려진 유적으로, 섬유질토기인 고산리식 토기와 양면떼기 방식의 석기 등이 출토된 유적이다. 고산리 유적에서 확인된 유물과 문화층은 한반도 및 동북아시아 초기 신석기문화의 형성과 전개 과정을 이해하는 데 중요한 자료로 평가되는 유적이다. 또한 고산리 일대에는 유적을 비롯하여 유네스코 세계지질공원인 수월봉, 제주특별자치도 기념물인 고산리 등명대, 천연기념물인 차귀도 등 다양한 자연·문화유산이 분포하고 있는 지역이다. 제주 고산리 유적 선사축제는 이러한 지역의 역사·문화·자연유산을 기반으로 선사시대 문화와 생활상을 체험할 수 있는 다양한 프로그램과 지역주민 참여 프로그램 등을 운영하는 지역축제이다. 축제를 통해 제주 고산리 유적의 역사적·문화적 가치를 소개하고 지역의 문화유산에 대한 관심과 이해를 높이는 것을 목적으로 하는 행사이다.
